Theatre festival Promethiade - Greeks, Turks, and Germans unleash Prometheus
In the year of the Capital of Culture, the European scene is a pulsating network more than ever before. The Promethiade is an intercultural project in three countries with three staging premises which have one thing in common: all of them are UNESCO world heritage locations.
The play „Prometheus Bound“ is the basis for the respective German, Turkish, and Greek productions. The directors and all the participants wanted to go beyond intellectual and geographical borders with their works.
The international theatre festival Promethiade is a joint project of the Zollverein Foundation Essen, the Capital of Culture Istanbul 2010, the Attic Festivals in Athens, and the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.

Three versions of Prometheus
The play "Prometheus Bound" is the only remaining part of the original Prometheus trilogy by the ancient tragedian Aischylos. In Greek, Prometheus means „someone thinking ahead“ –in Greek mythology, he is considered a friend of mankind, bringing it fire, reason, intellect, thus culture.
In "Prometheus Bound", Prometheus is nailed to the Caucasus. Even after that, he refuses to tell how Zeus will be banished from the throne someday, and accepts even harder punishments for thousands of years. With his descent into hell (to Tartarus) where an eagle is to eat his liver every day (when the eagle is finished, a new liver grows within Prometheus again and again), the first and only remaining part of the Prometheus trilogy by Aischylos ends. German theatre makers Rimini Protokoll chose the location of the original premiere in Athens, in the antique amphitheatre Odeon Herodes Atticus for their production of "Prometheus in Athens" featuring 100 Athenians.
The former coal mine Zollverein in Essen is the staging location for the Greek and also theTurkish production. On the premises of the former coal mine, Rimini Protokoll show a film and a presentation dealing with the production staged in Athens.
