The Ruhr area - recorded and remixed

What kind of people actually make music in the Ruhr Area? Considering the slogan “Ruhr metropolis”, can we call it a representative local „scene“ (or are there even several scenes)? Maybe the ”hot” popular music in Germany is produced in Hamburg, Düsseldorf or Berlin – at least that is the impression you get when checking the list of new releases every month. But how often do you hear the words “Bottrop”, “Bochum” or “Recklinghausen” in connection with a newcomer band? Well... Be that as it may – it is still a well-known fact that the Ruhr area also has its fair share of musicians. Grönemeyer, for instance, is a household name, although he has left and lives in London now... Helge Schneider, though, hasn’t left – most people know that, too.

In the series of episodes „The Ruhr area – recorded and remixed“, we went looking for the musicians of this region. What is their motivation, their credo? Are they influenced by their surrounding or do they pursue their art totally independent from their social environment? What does the area mean to them, which outlook do they have on life here, and does it complicate or improve their creative process?

Having all these questions in mind, we travelled the region and met a variety of people with a variety of perspectives – to name just a few: Helge Schneider, Kreator, Klaus Fiehe, Caliban, Kilians, Tom Liwa, Die Kassierer, Phil Fuldner, theatre musician Karsten Riedel, RWO president and owner of a cabaret Hajo Sommers, Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, Too Strong or the chief dramatic advisor of the Ruhrtriennale, Thomas Wördehoff… All of them answered our questions and told us exciting stories from the past and interesting facts from the present. So, after some episodes, a multi-faceted, colourful picture of this region and the musicians living in it unfolds before you.

Starting January, a new episode will be featured every month on 2010lab.tv .

Metropole Ruhr
These days, more than 5 million inhabitants do experience the transformation of their post- industrial Ruhr area in the western part of Germany to an exciting European „place to be“, a budding metropolis in a post-Capital of Culture 2010 identification process with its industrial culture as part of a collective memory being a characteristic feature – and an orchestrated mass event.
