Almost 200 years of industrial history have left their marks in the Emscher area: mining and steel industry have not only influenced the size and structure of the cities, but have also formed the landscape as it is today, epitomised by the Emscher like no other regional project.
Since the early 90s, when the reconstruction of the Emscher system and the design of the new Emscher valley were decided, a lot has happened: these days, the restructuring is in full swing, the big sewage plants are already modernised, and about half of the underground sewage pipes are installed. Beyond that, you get a first impression of the new Emscher valley (which will be realised by the Emschergenossenschaft until 2020) when looking at the almost 52 kilometers of redesigned above-ground water courses.
