Music in the city: Sir Ian

Sir Ian is the eloquent stagename of Bart Hoevenaars.

I remember Barts’ first cd-release with his noiserock band Mono, five years ago. Every visitor of their concert got a cd with their ticket. I must admit: after that show, I never listened to that cd again, in fear of ruptured ear drums.

But the boy became a slender man, shook off the noise and took up the acoustic guitar. Last weekend was the releaseparty of his solo-cd Apathology.

I was a fan of his February youtube postings, which consisted of unplugged versions of songs that are featured on the upcoming album. The videos were set at intruiging places like the museum, random watershores and under the covers.

With a face that the world can disappear in and a voice that could be Neil Youngs’ son and songs that could be written by Neil Young himself, the future can only be kind to Sir Ian. As long as he’ll grace the stage with his songs, audiences will surely listen attentively.

ps. And I’d say this record is an absolute winner for ‘the most beautiful album artwork of the year-award’. Illustrator Roos Mascini totally rocked it!

City

Rotterdam
Capital of Culture 2001 and City Of Architecture 2007. The Dutch port city is not only one of the most important hubs of global economy - it also reflects symptomatically the urban challenges of our time.
